  • Supports sustained energy, physical performance and an increased capacity to handle stress and support mood.
  • Has a fast onset and long-lasting action in comparison to known adaptogens.
  • Only Rhodiolife’s unique “fingerprint” composition consistently provides the spectrum of nutrients found in the root of the plant which are responsible for its biological activity.  With Rhodiolife®, not only is the percentage of the primary actives - rosavins and salidrosides - the same as the root, but so is the ratio of actives.  This is not the case with many other Rhodiola rosea ingredients on the market.

Built-In Stamina...
A sturdy plant growing at high altitudes in the inhospitable Siberian mountains, Rhodiola rosea thrives in the harsh polar environment. This plant is known by the local people as the “golden root” because of the stamina it imparts when consumed.
Guaranteed Composition
Rhodiolife® family provides the standardized compositions of the native root via sustainable harvesting of the plant in Siberia, and precise preparation of the extract.

identical, ensuring the quality and benefits of Rhodiolife®.

The Global Rhodiola Market Faces Tightness of Supply.
What You Should Know.

As has been reported in the press – and seen by companies purchasing Rhodiola for their consumer products - the global market for Rhodiola is seeing an unprecedented tightness of supply – particularly of Rhodiola rosea L – which is marketed in North America by PLT as Rhodiolife.

At PLT, we understand that botanical ingredients are prone to cycles of short supply, for a variety of reasons. As always, are monitoring the forces that shape this market and want to keep you informed of the causes of the short supply, the outlook for the near future and what you should know in the meantime. At the outset, it is important to note that PLT has positioned itself, via our trusted supply partner Nektium, to remain a reliable supplier of this popular ingredient now and into the future. To learn more about how Nektium secures supply of Rhodiola, check out the video at the bottom of this page.

Rhodiola Basics

Rhodiola rosea has a long history of use as a medicinal plant in Asia, Europe and North America. The genus Rhodiola is estimated to have between 60 and 90 species, possibly having originated in the mountainous regions of southwest China and the Himalayas. But it grows in northern climates around the world. One of the issues that affects the Rhodiola market is this diversity of Rhodiola species that can contribute to confusion (and occasionally mayhem) in labeling.  The reason this is important is that the chemical composition – and hence the health promoting properties – of different types of Rhodiola are vastly different. It gets more complicated, even within a specific plant – such as Rhodiola rosea L., the chemical composition of the essential oil from R. rosea root growing in different countries varies. For example, rosavin, rosarin, and rosin at their highest concentration according to many tests can be found only in R. rosea of Russian origin.

One more factor you’ll want to know about with regard to Rhodiola rosea – the highest quality material is wildcrafted. Which means that it isn’t under cultivation, but is subject to nature’s whim  in how it grows in the wild.

Today’s Rhodiola rosea Shortage

It is widely recognized today that supplies of Rhodiola rosea are tight and getting tighter. This is occurring for a number of reasons – because of the unique nature of this botanical ingredient but also harvesting and regulatory factors.

There is no doubt that the number of new commercial product introductions have increased demand for Rhodiola rosea globally. The number of new product introductions featuring Rhodiola has tripled in the past 5 years. This increased demand has led to early harvesting of Rhodiola – which as it delivers substandard raw material from a biochemical standpoint, also decreases the ability of these plants to grow in the wild. In China, Rhodiola rosea has gone on the endangered species list. Efforts to develop a cultivar of Rhodiola rosea that can be farmed and maintain levels of bioactivity have not been successful to date.

Industry Leader #1 (from US-China Health Products Association Report)

“Although people are trying hard to develop technology of artificial cultivation of Rhodiola in China, no one has been successful. All plants used for quality Rhodiola extracts thus far have been wild sourced. Area of high altitude (1800-2500 meters), low temperature and non-pollution are the optimum growing environment for this herb. Rhodiola can be cultivated, but little to no active ingredient can be detected in cultivated plants. There are two reasons for this, first farmers are harvesting too early due to market demand and also commercially cultivated plants are not under the same harsh conditions, which are necessary for the plant to produce higher contents of Rosavins and Salidrosides.

Adulterated Product in the Market

In October 2017, the American Botanical Council published a bulletin entitled “Adulteration of Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) Rhizome, Root and Extracts”. The report, authored by top natural products experts, outlined that less expensive Rhodiola species grown in China were commonly added to the intended species, resulting in its adulteration.

The report stated that the adulteration was both accidental – resulting from confusion about different Rhodiola plants during wildcrafting (harvesting) – and intentional because of lack of availability or high  prices for genuine Rhodiola rosea material. The report recommended the use of analytical methods to determine the genuineness of raw materials.

Third Party Verification

Anticipating the growing problem with Rhodiola supply, in early 2017, PLT Health Solutions and Nektium partnered with two respected ingredient identity and traceability firms – Botanical Liaisons, LLC and NaturPro Scientific, LLC to develop an ingredient identity verification program for Rhodiolife Rhodiola rosea L. Verification of Rhodiolife identity was based on a comprehensive set of criteria, including supplier verification, chain of custody review and identity testing using HPLC and DNA testing. The verification project was announced 26 October 2017.

Trish Flaster, CEO & Founder of Botanical Liaisons

“The global demand for Rhodiola rosea has rapidly increased, which has led to shortages of authentic material. Most harvesting comes from alpine regions and forests, where supplies can be depleted quickly without replanting and sustainability efforts. “I applaud PLT Health Solutions for taking the initiative to develop a sustainable supply by building relationships with rural co-ops in the Altai Mountains.”

Blake Ebersole, CEO of NaturPro Scientific

“For RhodioLife, responsible wildcrafting and sustainable sourcing is managed by a single entity and collection point, in the Altai Mountains, on the border of Russia, Mongolia, Kazakhstan and China. A Collection Management Plan (CMP), in accordance with WHO Good Agricultural and Collection Practices (GACP), is used to ensure responsible harvesting of material. This plan includes requirements for replanting, harvesting of mature plants, and ensures fair prices, safety and training for workers. We appreciate the significant investment in quality, transparency and traceability made by PLT and its ingredient partner Nektium Pharma in Las Palmas, Spain to develop and verify their source of Rhodiola.”
