MK-7 Vitamin K2
What is MK-7?
MK-7 from PLT is menaquinone-7, a form of Vitamin K2. PLT MK-7 ingredients are derived from the fermentation of soy or chickpea with Bacillus species. A nature-identical synthetic form is also available.
Vitamin K is the general term that applies to a group of structurally related vitamin compounds with blood clotting activity. Vitamin K1 (phylloquinone or phytonadione) is the form found in plants. Vitamin K2 is a group of vitamins called the menaquinones, which are classified by the number of units on their side chains (e.g., MK-4, MK-7, etc.) At least 50-60% of the circulating vitamin K in the body is in the form of K2.1
MK-7 is recognized in the scientific literature as an important form of vitamin K, offering support for normal blood clotting activity, bone mineral density, and prevention of arterial calcification. PLT offers several forms of MK-7—oil, powder, and cryocap forms—to give you maximum flexibility in developing your formulations. We have been helping companies develop exciting bone and heart health products based on MK-7 ingredients for over a decade.
Adequate intake of vitamin K is essential, and many individuals may not consume enough, especially if their diets are low in leafy green vegetables. As discussed below, research shows that vitamin K2 supplementation is beneficial for both bone and cardiovascular health. The bioavailability of vitamin K2 (MK-7) is substantially higher than for K1, the form found in leafy green veggies.2
CLINICALLY-STUDIED VITAMIN K2 FOR BONE AND CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH
The average dietary intake of K vitamins has dropped significantly over the last 50 years, and today’s intake is believed to be insufficient. Research shows that vitamin K2 is beneficial for both bone and cardiovascular health; MK-7 is the best-documented natural vitamin K2 ingredient.1
ViTAMiN K2 (MK-7) REsEARCH
The beneficial effects of vitamin K2 have been well documented through years of research. The large-scale, 10-year Rotterdam study showed improved cardiovascular health in individuals consuming higher vs. lower levels of vitamin K2. Researchers concluded that adequate intake of menaquinone could be important for the prevention of coronary heart disease.3
Bone Strength Study:
Results of a randomized, double-blind clinical trial showed that when taken in nutritional doses (180 mcg/d) for three years, MK-7 improved bone mineral density, bone strength, and cardiovascular health.4 This study was the first MK-7 trial to show these benefits. This was also the first study to show clear, statistically significant improvements in bone health and cardiovascular health from menaquinone supplementation.
